Very interesting thread. Here in my hometown we had an asperger-like karaoke regular who made the rounds of all the karaoke shows - mine and others - for many years. He was an exceptionally bad and tone-deaf, timing-deaf singer from a technical point of view, very loud and with an alarmingly hard-to...

buzz-at-home drinkers, nursers and waterboys are the natural enemies of the karaoke business - as dangerous to the economic livlihood of our craft as the notoriously BAD singer who drives customers from the bars with just a few measures of his up. That said, there are some advantages to karaoke as b...

Coming back once a year to update the demise of slipdom in the world of karaoke! I now accept people just telling me their song while still asking them to fill out slips next time, most of my singers are ok with it, and the ones that arent i deal with. I have giveawys however where the slips are req...

Well all these months later i am still on the fence about tip jars and haven't yet put one out. The comments on both sides are excellent so i guess its a personal choice. i cant help thnking that if the clubowner perceives i am making a killing with tips maybe he can lower my pay lol. i also have a ...

I like both sides of the karaoke-DJ music argument, but lean with Wiseguy...versatility, done right, is always right. That said, someone like Big Dog - whose very reputation is built on karaoke only, carves a niche in his market as being the singers' KJ, nothing at all wrong with that. There is one ...

Judging is the key to karaoke contests, as long as the judging is totally separated from the KJ all will be ok for the KJ (usually). Also, duration. As long as the contest is not longer than a couple of months.....eight weeks gives you seven finalists and figuring on two no shows, a field of five yo...

MICROPHONE DISINFECTING

I know plenty of KJs who, for a fact, do virtually nothing to clean or maintain their microphones until they break and are replaced with more cheap and dirty microphones. My process - not optimal by any means - is to spray them with disinfectant lightly before each show and service the balls (yuk,yu...

When was the last time you heard Meredith Brooks, Rollings Stones or Elton John sing "BITCH!" on the radio?!?!?

Well in the words of the one true god - No one gets out of here alive. };=D I agree with wiseguy that every religion is crap - the mere mortals who invent and perpetuate religions are just as dumb as KJs, and equally ill-equipped to fathom the cosmos. I also agree with bigdog in that music sure does...

One more thing about slips...they can advertise for you, something in their hand with your logo, website, email, FB, phone numger, whatever that they can take with them, if you're looking to do get lucrative private parties.

Dan, the hitech interfaces for singers is impressive. I've been thinking about picking up two cheap netbooks for myself and the "RED" songbook table, maybe tethering the little lapper to the table somehow so it doesn't take a walk. But they would just help me and the singers get to their s...

I run my rotations mostly like WISEGUY. Getting to the topic of the thread, I have no problem with bar jumpers - they bring me more business than they take away. I have a Saturday show where a competing show is RIGHT NEXT DOOR in the same strip mall, so it happens alot. If I call them and they're go...

Haven't added to this thread in a year, but in that year I have not put out a tip jar. My tips have been averaging about $20 a month with out one. Now I am leaning toward putting out a SONG FUND jar, for both tips and song suggestion slips. it costs at least $50-60 a month to update karaoke music ef...

Yeah I hear you ....everybody with a laptop, a powered speaker or two and a couple of shit microphones is suddenly a KJ now. But I'm n a small market (Wilmington Pop. 100,000) where its easy to stand out and command more with quality: Effect lights, 4 speakers, 2 TVs, 6 mics, real amps and mixing bo...

Most of the time these things work themselves out and a club evolves into a "both" club. Karaoke itself lends itself to diversity in most cases. There wull always be exceptiojns though, there's still alot of hate in this country.
