Re: Should I even consider going back to a show that I used to do

I don't consider myself to be especially "hip or enlightened" but rather open to the musical preferences of others. I would never deny someone the right to sing the type of song they like regardless of how I feel about it. I've been a bar owner so I've approached entertainment from both s...

Re: Should I even consider going back to a show that I used to do

Without going to the extreme end of the vulgarity scale, such as rap songs with explicit lyrics, how would you adapt to someone telling you that you could not play songs by let's say Aerosmith, Cheap Trick, Led Zepplin, or Poison even though they are the type of songs getting the most requests, sim...

Re: Should I even consider going back to a show that I used to do

I am lucky to be able to adapt to whatever demographic that I am put into but would rather deal with a venue that while it will allow Classic Rock wants a clean show. Personally I hate hip-hop due to the language in it. The foulest words I tolerate is when it's maybe a single time in the song that ...

Re: Should I even consider going back to a show that I used to do

These were top 40 pop and rock songs. If I remember correctly the song that set the guy off was a Kiss song. I play what the people ask for. If all I had were "golden oldies" the only places I could play would be American Legions and VFWs. Plus I'd be bored out of my mind. And BTW, I am a...

Re: Should I even consider going back to a show that I used to do

8) Never had that problem but then again my rule of thumb is I never play any songs that my mother would have objected to. If that makes me a Grumpy old man so be it. I stick to Golden Oldies and don't do any gangster rap etc.etc.etc., you have to play to the crowd wiseguy and my target market "...

Re: Should I even consider going back to a show that I used to do

Lone, here's the rub, I personally think that a tip jar looks tacky and desperate, plus if I accept a tip and the person who gave it to me.gets up next it looks like I took a bribe. Granted that actually can't look that way if the other singers are paying attention to the screen because I display t...

Re: Should I even consider going back to a show that I used to do

I have decided that the last show at the center that is closing is going to be the last time I provide my services to that particular group of people unless it's for a special occasion and I am still going to insist on getting paid cash in advance. I start a new gig at an American Legion post on Fr...

Re: Host singing and when not to sing

Being honest, I can say that the only time I've seen a bad karaoke host get a big crowd is when the bar already was having big crowds without any entertainment or just a jukebox. In my area, you need to have a following of singers to be consistently successful. You will never accomplish this if you...

Re: Host singing and when not to sing

Turns out that the venue is a singing crowd. They are actually replacing the hosts that they use to have. Apparently the Saturday host was doing something wrong that the venue didn't like so they fired her. Às soon as they fired her the Friday host quit. I figure he was either a close friend, roman...

Re: Host singing and when not to sing

There are certainly rules at my karaoke shows and they haven't changed since 1993. Some things may change, mainly the technology, but two things that all singers still care about the most are a fair rotation and getting to sing as many songs as possible. If you don't provide those two things you ar...

Re: Host singing and when not to sing

Every song I sing will be one less song for the other singers. My shows are 100% about the crowd, especially the singers. Unless it becomes necessary for me to sing I'm not going to. 8) The older I get wiseguy the more I'm convinced that the first rule of karaoke is there seems to be no rules. Like...

Re: Should I even consider going back to a show that I used to do

Another thing to consider is that both of these places are non profit agencies. I am not there to generate money for them but to provide the means of entertainment and assisting with the recovery process of this particular community. And it helps with my own recovery. I intensely enjoy helping othe...

Re: Should I even consider going back to a show that I used to do

Ok, right now I have been doing a show for about three years at a Social center that I am a member of. I have been doing it for free because I am getting more than monetary satisfaction out of doing it. I previously ran a monthly show at the other social center but charged them because they didn't ...

Re: Host singing and when not to sing

When is it okay for a host to sing? Personally, I will sing the first song and if I have more than 8 singers won't sing again for the rest of the night unless someone needs a duet partner. I actually don't have a problem with hosts singing as long as it's the same amount of songs in a rotation as t...

Re: New KJ, I have some questions

8) Danny this idea of pardoning one's self really makes you wonder. Even Richard Nixon had Gerald Ford pardon him, and never even considered pardoning himself. I guess Trump feels that if he pardons himself he can still be President and not have to worry about VP Pence doing the dirty deed. Ford par...
