MY KARAOKE SONG COLLECTION IS IT LEGAL?

Post by German Saucedo »

I would appreciate some comments and guidance on this subject. I do some
karaoke shows singing myself and also with audience participation and have the following collection in a laptop:
1.- 3 thousand songs (3-SCDG disks) Music Maestro converted to ZIP files
2.- 2 thuosand songs (2 SCDG disks) DKK converted to ZIP files
3.- 1 thousand songs in VCD format converted from Laser disks, CDGs, DVDs VHS, etc.
All this material I purchased and have the original disks, tapes etc.
I use Siglos and also TriKar to play in my laptop to a Vocopro mixer/amp

Questions:
1.-Can I have this audited to make it legal?
2.-Who do I contact to audit music from at least 20 different manufacturers?
3.-Does Chartbuster or any other company have authority to OK my collection?
or it only audits its own material? Do they have the authority to bust me if
I am using someone else's material?
Please someone advise me. I am more a performer (former opera tenor)
than an KJ and do private parties more than clubs but also do DJ. I am
a retired Electronic Engineer and do this to supplement my SS check.
Thank you very much

Because you have the original discs, I wouldn't worry about it. The VCD's might be an issue though unless you have the original laser discs, CDGs, DVDs etc.
1:yes you can be audited.
2. right now only SC and CB are doing audits. SC is in communication wit Zoom and Sunfly about an arrangement to sue those who don't have the original media.
3. they pretty much only care about their own material but are doing stuff like purchasing the rights to orphaned brands (CB has the rights now for Sweet Georgia Brown) to working out agreements with still producing brands like Sunfly and Zoom.
If you're not going into bars and only doing the occasional private party, the chances that a karaoke manufacturer's investigators dealing with you is slim to none.
Truth be told none of the SCDGs are licensed from what I have learned from meetings with SC and CB.

German Saucedo,
You posted that you have 1000 songs in VCD format. I have about 5 times that and would like to be able to add it to my library of CD+G's stored in my hard drive. I am unable to rip them into my hard drive so I can access the as quickly as I do my CD+G. If I may ask, what program did you use to do that?
Thanks in advance.
