Need Advice for Personal HTPC Equipment

Post by eadwyn »

Hey all,

My fiance loves karaoke and I thought I would do something special for her and get a karaoke setup on the htpc we have. I've been looking around for some decent equipment that can handle at least 2 mics that will work for a family room environment. She is in a jazz choir and already owns a good mic and I have the software already for the htpc. I believe all that I need now is a mixer and a PA speaker.

From my research so far I'm thinking one of these for a mixer:

For a PA speaker I am thinking something like this:

http://www.costco.com/ION-Block-Rocker- ... reId=10301

I am a complete novice with this sort of stuff, so I don't know how well these will work (or if they will work together for what I need).

This system will primarily be used for a family room set up for a max of maybe 20ish people (normally less than 10) and I don't want anything super large space-wise. I'm currently thinking a budget of around $300; however if there is a recommendation for another hundred or so that is far superior I would be interested in looking into those as well.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

The only thing I can see wrong with the Behringer mixer is that if you are using both mike inputs the other inputs don't allow any EQ control for your music input so you would need to set this in windows before inputting to the mixer, the Yamaha MG82cx seems the better choice as that has EQ on 2 of the other channels plus 4 mike inputs so of the 2 that would be my choice.

As to the speaker I see it is Bluetooth device which would be fine just for playing your music direct from your computer or other device but to the best of my knowledge no way to play the mixed sound via the mixer so if that is your idea I don't think it possible.
If you particularly want a wireless blue tooth connection from your computer this behringer "eurilive b112w" speaker might be better, it has inputs for two wired mics with mixer abilities although limited "No FX or reverb capability) you can have your music streamed to it wirelessly and mix with two wired mikes or for extra cost buy their ultralink ulm 100 wireless mike then be completely wireless except for a mains power supply.

Or forget your wireless system and take a look at this compact system with built in mixer and a pair of speakers that pack away neat when not in use.

I have no experience of these products myself but think they offer better than the speaker you mention and they include the mixer with effects.

Or go with your mixer to a wired active speaker setup. perhaps others could advise on beter speaker for your use.

Thank you Mr. DJ for your advice. I might go the route of the 300 if there isn't a more affordable option more around $300.
