Group singing - seeking microphone suggestions

Post by rustcat »

We like to end the karaoke night with group sing-along medley of popular songs. There are about 20 people on a small stage (14 x 10 ft). I've experimented with having a couple of SM-58s on boom stands, but looking for something better. A couple of people take over the wireless mics, but I have to keep those very low. Turning up the gain on the SM-58s leads to feedback due to the monitor. I've read somewhere that using a couple of omni-directional condensor mics on booms may work better? But I'm afraid the floor monitor (playing the karaoke tracks) will feedback immediately. I'm sure I need to organize the group position better (less scattered around) - should there be groups of 4-5 in a semi-circular pattern around each mic? What do I need to do about the feedback? Turning off the monitor is not helpful since people need to hear the track clearly to keep up.

Any guidance and wisdom is most appreciated. Cheers,

Joe
